Contest Regulations

1. General Provisions

1.1. The establisher and organizer of Admiralty Needle International Contest for Young Designers (hereinafter referred to as the Contest) is Federal State-Funded Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education Saint-Petersburg State University of Technology and Design (hereinafter SPSUTD).

1.2. The Contest has been held under the auspices of SPSUTD annually since 1995 (the last week of October or/and the first week of November.

1.3. The Contest is financed from the non-budgetary sources of SPSUTD and sponsor contributions.

2. Contest Mission and Objectives

2.1. To encourage young designers’ creative initiative and to promote the youth social activities.

2.2. To develop conditions for the youth to achieve their creative potential in the field of design.

2.3. To contribute to training specialists in the field of clothing and textile industry.

2.4. To publicize young designers’ creativity in different ways including the mass media.

2.5. To attract both Russian and foreign specialists interested in fashion and design.

2.6. To make students and young specialists aware of the latest trends of the world fashion industry.

2.7. To establish conditions for building and maintaining links with creative youth from the neighboring countries and beyond, contributing to professional and creative exchanges.

3. Contest Requirements

3.1. Young people who are studying and graduates aged between 16 and 35 are invited to participate in the Contest.

3.2. Contest participants have to submit photo materials of their collection or collections (photos of minimum of three outfits) to the Contest Organizational Committee before October 7 of the current year.

3.3. Application form has to be submitted on the Contest web site only at http://igladesign.ru.

3.4. The Contest has three categories: Apparels, Footwear and Accessories, Children’s wear.

3.5. The Contest offers the following nominations:
  • 3.5.1. Apparel Category: Prèt-a-Porte Diffussion; Prèt-a-Porter De Luxe; Avantgarde.
  • 3.5.2. Footwear and Accessories Category: Accessories; Prèt-a-Porter; Exotica.
  • 3.5.3. Children’s Wear Category: casual clothes; dressy clothes.

3.6. Any contestant has a right to apply for any nomination or several nominations simultaneously, with different collections being presented. The collections must be works of authorship, original and developed in the current year. The number of collections of one designer or a team of co-designers is not limited. Items of clothing, shoes or accessories made without a proper processing treatment are not allowed to participate.

3.7. The contestants are provided with professional models in accordance with the number of the outfits in the collection. A single image is created for all models with a natural make-up and classical hairstyles. Catwalks of all collections are organized in a single style and theatrical elements are not allowed.

3.8. On the day of the arrival and registration contestants have to have their passport, invitation which has been forwarded to them after the first round of the Contest (photo round) and recorded music to accompany the collection (CD with mp3 format audio tracks).

3.9. By submitting the Contest application a contestant fully accepts all the Contest terms and requirements of the present Contest Regulations.

3.10. By submitting the Contest application contestants fully agree that all kinds of photo, video, audio, visual and verbal materials or any other kind of materials taken in connection with and during the Contest or sent by a contestant belong entirely and exclusively to the Contest.

3.11. By submitting the Contest application contestants fully agree that the Contest has an exclusive right to publish and reproduce any photo, video, audio, visual and verbal materials taken in connection with and during the Contest or sent by a contestant (including photos of Contest participants) in the mass media, on the Internet, radio and television and to sell the above mentioned materials in its discretion without notifying or informing the contestant, designer of the collection.

4. Rounds and Schedule of the Contest

The Contest has two rounds:
4.1. Preliminary Round of the Contest.

  • 4.1.1. The selection round is a distance round.
  • 4.1.2. The selection of the applicants’ collections is based on the collection photos (photo selection).
  • 4.1.3. The deadline for the selection round applications is October 7 of the current year.
  • 4.1.4. By submitting the Contest application a contestant fully accepts all the Contest terms and requirements set out in the present Contest Regulations.
  • 4.1.5. Notice of going through the selection round is forwarded to applicants not later than October 15.

4.2. Final Round of the Contest.

  • 4.2.1. The final round of the Contest is an on-site stage which includes:
    • Catwalk shows of the contestants who have gone through the selection round in accordance with the nominations listed in clause 3.5 and got the notice from the Organizational Committee of the Contest,
    • final gala catwalk.
  • 4.2.2. All catwalk shows of the contestants’ collections take place in Saint-Petersburg State University of Technology and Design (Saint-Petersburg, 18, Bolshaya Morskaya ulitsa) during the last week of October – the first week of November in accordance with the Contest schedule.
  • 4.2.3. Upon completion of the contestants’ collections catwalks the international jury decides on the results of the Contest and selects the collections to participate in the final gala catwalk show but no more than 45 collections in three categories of the Contest all together.
  • 4.2.4. During the catwalk shows only the collection title and number are announced. The collection show is accompanied by the music records provided by the contestant to the organizational committee on the registration day.
  • 4.2.5. During the final catwalk show the name of the collection fashion designer(s), city/town and collection title are announced. The music records for the final catwalk show are provided by the Contest organizational committee.
  • 4.2.6. On the final stage completion a rewarding ceremony is held and some special prizes are awarded.

5. Contest Standards for Judging

5.1. The evaluation of every contestant is based on a ten point scale (from 1 to 10 points) and is guided by the following criteria: collection as an artistic and image-bearing system, collection as an individually tailored image, collection as a composition mastery (quality of the materials and their treatment, design and technology concepts, colour scheme), collection as innovation development and application (the use of revolutionary ideas, shapes, materials and technologies).

6. International Jury

6.1. The Jury of the Contest is international and made up of both Russian and foreign prominent fashion industry figures, heads and specialists of educational institutions specializing in the field.

6.2. The organizational committee of the Contest appoints the panel of the jury from the international grand jury of the current year for each contest category in compliance with the peculiarities of the contest category.

6.3. The Contest jury evaluates collections allowed to participate in the final stage in person.

6.4. The contest jury pronounces their decision and decides on the prize and award winners of the Contest.

7. Winning Places, Awards and Prizes

7.1. The first, second and third places are awarded in all nominations of the Apparel Category. Besides, the Grand Prix of the Contest is awarded in the Apparel Category. The places are awarded in accordance with the gained points. The Grand-Prix is awarded to the contestant with the highest number of points in the Category. If according to the current Regulations there are a few applicants for the Grand-Prix, the deciding vote belongs to the Contest organizers.

7.2. The first, second and third places are awarded in all nominations of the Children’s Wear and Footwear and Accessories Categories in accordance with the gained points.

7.3. All winners and prizewinners of the Contest are awarded with diplomas and the Contest brand-name prizes as well as gifts from the Contest partners.

7.4. Internships provided by the jury members and the Contest partners are allocated between the winners on the basis of the jury decision.

7.5. The Contest organizers have a right to award special prizes.
